Study Indicates Tricycle Accidents Injure Thousands of Children Each Year

A new study published in the well-respected journal Pediatrics reveals that thousands of children each year are hurt in accidents involving tricycles.

The study found that during 2012 and 2013 more than 9,000 tricycle related injuries were treated in U.S. emergency rooms.  The study was led by researchers at the Medical College of Georgia and Emory University.  Some of the children had very serious injuries including limb amputations, fractures and internal organ damage.

The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that most children don’t have the necessary balance for tricycles until around age 3.  As a parent of young children, I have seen how tricky it can be for a young child to ride a tricycle and have often wondered how many children are hurt using tricycles.  The number of children seriously hurt was far larger than I would have expected.  Based on these statistics, it would appear that tricycle manufacturers should be exercising more care in the design of their tricycles.  Hopefully, this study will lead to greater safety for children.
