Kill Devil Hills Bicycle Accident Injures Russian Exchange Student

A young woman visiting the United States from Russia was seriously injured in a bicycle accident early Friday morning in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina.  The accident happened around 3:22 am on US 158.  According to available information, the student was hit by a man driving a Nissan Altima.  After hitting the bicyclist, the Altima fled the scene but the driver was later apprehended.  The driver faces numerous charges including driving while impaired and felony hit-and-run.

The young woman riding the bicycle was apparently doing everything right under the law including riding with a light and reflectors.  Hopefully, she will recover from her injuries.

This wreck is very similar to a wreck several years ago involving a young Ukranian man who was killed in a hit-and-run bicycle accident in Kill Devil Hills.  In that case, we represented the young man’s family and brought a claim against the driver of the car and the bar that served him excessive amounts of alcohol.  After much litigation, that claim resolved for a significant payment to the family.
