N.C. State Campus Bicyclist Hit by DWI Driver

A serious wreck early Sunday morning has resulted in significant injuries to an N.C. State student.

The wreck happened on N.C. State’s campus on Dan Allen Drive.  Apparently, Ross Chapman was turning left into the parking deck when he hit Steven Otto who was riding his bike on Dan Allen Drive.

Police say Mr. Chapman’s blood alcohol concentration was above the legal limit at the time of the wreck.  Mr. Otto was taken to WakeMed for treatment of his injuries and we hope for his speedy recovery.

As a former N.C. State student, I have ridden bikes many times along Dan Allen Drive.  Indeed, cars routinely fail to pay attention to the rights of bicyclists on campus.  We are aware of one other serious wreck on Dan Allen Drive involving a bicyclist within the last year.
