Bicycle Sidewalk Accidents
North Carolina bicycle sidewalk accidents can be confusing under the laws of the various cities and communities of North Carolina.
Many people assume that it is illegal to ride a bicycle on the sidewalk in North Carolina. As noted in the following excerpt from the NCDOT Guide to North Carolina Bicycle and Pedestrian Laws, there is not a statewide law that addresses riding a bicycle on a sidewalk.
“Riding on Sidewalks
The General Statutes do not address bicycling on sidewalks. Rather this issue is usually addressed through local ordinances. Please refer to the section on Local Ordinances on page 24 of this guide.”
As further noted in the NCDOT guide, there is tremendous variation in the manner by which local municipalities address the issue of bicycling on a sidewalk.
