I recently came across an interesting editorial in a North Carolina newspaper discussing the tragic number of bicyclist deaths on North Carolina roads.
Apparently, since 2001, more than 200 bicyclists have been killed on North Carolina roadways with thousands more injured.

A bicyclist was seriously injured in Salisbury, North Carolina on Friday when he was hit by a taxi driver.
The wreck apparently happened on U.S. 29. According to reports, the taxi driver says he did not see the bicyclist.

It is not clear from the article how the wreck occurred by apparently the taxi driver is not being charged. However, if the wreck happened because the taxi driver passed the bicyclist too closely, the taxi driver would appear to have violated North Carolina driving laws.

It does not happen often, but a bicyclist was charged with a safe movement violation for causing a wreck on Monday morning in Wilmington.
The wreck happened on Wrightsville Avenue when a bicyclist pulled out in front of on-coming traffic and was hit by a Cadillac. The bicyclist was injured but not seriously.
This is an interesting but important situation. As advocates for bicyclists, we often point out that bicyclists are to be treated as any other vehicle under the alws of North Carolina. In this case, that same fair treatment required that the bicyclist be given a citation for causing this wreck.

Sharing the road with bicyclists was the theme of an excellent story tonight on NBC-17 news.
The story noted that bicycles in North Carolina are considered vehicles and are entitled to the same use of the roads as cars and trucks.

A serious wreck early Sunday morning has resulted in significant injuries to an N.C. State student.
The wreck happened on N.C. State’s campus on Dan Allen Drive. Apparently, Ross Chapman was turning left into the parking deck when he hit Steven Otto who was riding his bike on Dan Allen Drive.
Police say Mr. Chapman’s blood alcohol concentration was above the legal limit at the time of the wreck. Mr. Otto was taken to WakeMed for treatment of his injuries and we hope for his speedy recovery.

As a former N.C. State student, I have ridden bikes many times along Dan Allen Drive. Indeed, cars routinely fail to pay attention to the rights of bicyclists on campus. We are aware of one other serious wreck on Dan Allen Drive involving a bicyclist within the last year.
