Child Seriously Injured in Wendell NC Bicycle Accident

A five year old child was seriously injured in a bicycle accident in Wendell, North Carolina on Monday.  The accident happened near the intersection of Mattox Street and Hollybrook Road.

There is very little information about how the accident happened except that it involved an SUV driven by a 70-year old man.  The young bicycle rider was transported to Wakemed in critical but stable condition.  We can only hope that he recovers form his injuries.

Bicyclist Vung Vu Killed in Hit-and-Run Charlotte N.C. Bike Accident

A gentleman named Vung Vu was riding his bicycle on South Tryon Street in Charlotte N.C. on Sunday evening when he was hit and killed by a passing vehicle.

The accident has resulted in multiple charges against the driver of the vehicle including involuntary manslaughter, felony hit and run and driving while impaired.  The vehicle involved was apparently a 1996 Jeep Cherokee.

Statesville NC Bicyclist Kyle Eller Killed in Hit-and-Run Accident

A gentleman named Kyle Eller was killed on Monday evening as he was riding his bicycle on Barry Oak Road near Statesville, North Carolina.

According to the available information, Mr. Eller was hit by a hit-and-run driver between Longview and Barnhill Roads.  The vehicle that hit Mr. Eller left the scene and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol is searching for evidence regarding the vehicle.

UPDATE:  We have now learned that a 38 year old man named Robert Harkey has been arrested for this accident.  Mr. Harkey has been charged with one count of felony hit-and-run.  It is not clear if there are other charges such as misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

Bicyclist Injured in Holden Beach, NC Bike Accident

A bicyclist was injured on Sunday morning in an accident in Holden Beach, North Carolina.  The accident happened at the intersection of Holden Beach Road and Ocean Boulevard West at around 7:45 am.

Based on the information available, it appears that a car turned into the path of the bicyclist and the bicyclist was unable to avoid the car.  The bicyclist was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC for treatment.  The driver of the car was cited for a failure to yield.

Bicyclist Injured in Accident During Raleigh Ironman Race

A bicyclist participating in the Raleigh Ironman competition was seriously injured when he was hit by an SUV on Sunday morning.  The accident happened on New Hill Holleman Road in New Hill after the bicyclist had finished the swimming portion of the race and was beginning the bicycle portion.

As we understand things, a woman driving an SUV was passing the Ironman bicyclists on a double yellow line when she suddenly stopped in the middle of the road causing the accident.  The woman was charged with careless and reckless driving.   The bicyclist was taken to Wakemed for treatment and is expected to recover.

Bicyclist Gilberto Acosta Injured in Wilmington NC Bike Accident

A bicyclist named Gilberto Acosta was injured in a Wilmington NC accident that apparently involved a hit-and-run tractor trailer.

The accident happened just before 7:00 am on Carolina Beach Road near Raleigh Street.  Apparently, the tractor-trailer hit Mr. Acosta and knocked him to the ground and kept on driving north on Carolina Beach Road.  The tractor-trailer is described as green with no logos or tags on the body of the truck.  Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to call the Wilmington Police Department at 910-343-3609.

City of Raleigh Receives Bicycle Pavement Marking Grant

Some good news for bicyclists in Raleigh – the city has recently received a $1.1 million grant from the federal government to construct over 27 miles of marked roadway bicycle lanes.

To help determine the best streets to receive the markings, the city will host four meetings during the month of January during which time you can ask questions about the proposals.  The first meeting will be on Monday January 27 at the Raleigh Municipal Building at 222 West Hargett Street.

Carrboro Hosts Bike Summit

Carrboro, North Carolina has become a model town for bicycle safety in North Carolina.  This weekend, Carrboro will host a “bike summit” of officials, planners, engineers and bike advocates to discuss how to make bicycling safer.

The weekend will include several group rides and will be based out of the Hampton Inn and Suites on East main Street in Carrboro.  Apparently, the Town of Chapel Hill will use the event to unveil a new master bike plan.  Also for discussion will be the preliminary plans for a bike-sharing program in Raleigh.

Wilmington Bicycle Accident Results in Injuries

A bicyclist in Wilmington, North Carolina was injured on Friday afternoon after an accident on Dawson Street.

The accident happened around 3 pm near the Dairy Queen.  Reports as to what happened in the accident are unclear but it appears that the bicyclist was traveling with a green light when they were struck by a vehicle.  Police are apparently investigating the accident.
